Manatee Encounter on a Kayak Tour
Video of a manatee encounter on a kayak tour in Central Florida. Check out this video of a manatee feeding on leaves along the shoreline. The manatee is pulling a branch of leaves down into the water and munching away on the leaves of a mangrove tree.
Pictures of the Manatee Feeding on Leaves
There are three pictures below of a manatee feeding on the leaves of a branch it has pulled underwater. Manatees prefer to eat seagrasses and aquatic plants, but there is not enough seagrass available in area lagoons in recent years, so manatees are forced to search for alternative food sources. A manatee may spend eight hours or more daily feeding, especially now considering the scarcity of their primary food sources. They need to eat vegetation for long periods of time because they must consume from 4 to 9 percent of their body weight daily.
