We enjoy going on outdoor adventures and discovering new places as a family. So, when our family vacation to Florida was planned, we decided to take a guided kayak tour of Thousand Islands in Cocoa Beach. We couldn’t wait to explore the mangrove tunnels and see the wildlife we’d only read about.
Kayak Tour Question
I Have a Question: Cindy asked, “I am 60 years old, will it be hard for me to keep up?”
Cameron’s Answer: Thank you for the question, Cindy. The answer is no, unless you have a serious health issue, you should have no trouble keeping up. We travel at a leisurely pace, to ensure everyone has a good time.

We Met at the Tour Launch Location About 9:00 AM
On the tour day, we got up early and drove to the kayak launch location. We met our guide Cameron, who gave us a quick kayaking lesson and safety instructions. After getting into our kayaks, we paddled toward the mangrove tunnels. We could see the sandy bottom and the colorful fish swimming beneath us because the water was calm and clear.
The shade from the trees provided significant relief from the hot sun as we paddled into the mangrove tunnels. Our kayaks had to be maneuvered through narrow passageways and around the twisted roots of mangrove trees. It was an exciting experience, and we felt like we were in a movie.

We Saw manatee and Other Wildlife on Our Kayak Tour
We were astounded by the wildlife we saw on the tour. A majestic great blue heron stood on a branch, watching us as we glided by. We also saw dolphins swimming, leaping out of the water, and flipping. It was an incredible sight that we will never forget.
We saw a manatee, one of the world’s most endangered marine mammals, as we continued our tour. We came to a halt and watched as they swam gracefully past us, their slow and gentle movements awe-inspiring us. We also saw an osprey perched on a branch looking for fish in the water. It took off quickly and dove into the water, catching a fish in its talons. The bird’s speed and precision astounded us.
Throughout the tour, we saw a variety of wild bird species, each with its own set of characteristics and behaviors. To name a few, we saw pelicans, cormorants, ibises, and egrets. Our knowledgeable guide, who made the tour exciting and educational, taught us about their habitats, diets, and behaviors.
